Brain Injury Guidelines
Guidelines for Concussion/Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
The Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation has developed a guideline for use by healthcare professionals working with persons who sustained mild traumatic brain injury/concussion. With a recent update of the guideline (July 2018), a patient version was also released. The guidelines are based on the most recent research evidence, as well as input from experts and patients.
For Healthcare Professionals
This guideline was developed for use by healthcare professionals in providing best-practice care to their patients who sustained a mild traumatic brain injury/concussion. The guideline includes background information explaining the current state of knowledge on the subject matter, recommendations for care and management of the injury and persistent symptoms, as well as tools to help with assessment and care.
For Patients
The patient version of the guideline was developed with the goal of improving communication between the patient with a mild traumatic brain injury/concussion and their healthcare provider. It covers the same core topics as the professional guideline, with tools specific for patients (e.g., forms for noting medications, symptoms, and questions to ask the doctor).
Guideline for Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury
The Clinical Practice Guideline for the Rehabilitation of Adults with Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury was developed by the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation to improve the rehabilitative care provided by healthcare professionals and managers to adults with traumatic brain injury. The guideline is meant to assist professionals in making research- and expert-informed clinical decisions across the continuum of care.
